Fairhill Principal's Blog

A quick glimpse into life at Fairhill

By

Who is Mrs. Hunstad?

I am a proud mother and wife, a graduate of Fairfax County Public Schools and a native of Reston. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from Mary Washington College and a Master’s degree from George Mason University in Curriculum and Instruction.

My professional educational career began at Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences  where I taught students who thrived in general education, special education and advanced academics settings.

I am a lifelong learner; receiving my Administration and Supervision endorsement from the University of Virginia. After receiving my endorsement I began my journey into administration as a participant of the LEAD Fairfax program as an intern at Glen Forest Elementary School.

I was also fortunate to support Columbia Elementary as acting assistant principal during my internship. I have spent the last five years proudly serving the Terraset Elementary community as assistant principal. During this time I also spent six months supporting the Herndon Elementary community as an assistant principal.

I am looking forward to continuing to give back to the FCPS community that made such a positive impact on my life as the new principal of Fairhill Elementary. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or the staff so we can assist you and your family.

Go Tigers!

Passing the Baton!

Carol and I had the pleasure of welcoming Candace Hunstad (Fairhill’s new principal) to the Region 2 Family, AND to the Fairhill Family this morning.  I am excited to pass the baton to our new administrative team. I know that Fairhill is in good hands with Candace and Carol as I move into retirement.

Thank you to our entire Fairhill community for all your support and love over the years.  I will miss our students, staff and families; and wish you all the best this summer and into the future.

I LOVE Fairhill!

Thank you to the Fairhill students, staff, and community for allowing me to serve you for the past 12 years; 7 as principal.  At the end of June I will retire with the most wonderful memories of being a part of the Fairhill Family! Fairhill is a very special place to work and learn and I am sure it will continue to be so under the leadership of a new principal and with the continued dedication of our amazingly talented staff and supportive community.  I love Fairhill, and always will!  I will miss you.

Brownies Take Care of the Earth!

On April 20 our Fairhill Brownie Troop 248 completed a service project to show their understanding of taking care of our world and environment on Earth Day!  Together they planted Sedums ‘Autumn Fire’ and lavender in front of our school. These attractive and beneficial plants will bloom in the fall and will attract butterflies to our school. Thank you for helping Fairhill and our earth!

Thank you Brownies!

6th Grade at the Ford’s Theater Oratory Festival

Last week our sixth grade students did a fantastic job representing our school and school division at the Ford’s Theater Oratory Festival. Since October, the students worked on a regular basis with a Ford’s Theater Teaching Artist to build their public speaking skills and learned to inspirationally communicate ideas. Each class learned a speech by Abraham Lincoln and then all their hard work culminated in the presentation on stage at Ford’s Theater.  It was awesome to see the confidence that the children displayed as they performed for parents, visitors, and other students from around the DC, MD, VA area.

Congratulations 6th graders!  You did a fantastic job! I am so proud of your work :).

Box Tops for Education Fall Challenge Winners

Last Friday we celebrated a great response to the Box Tops for Education fall challenge.  The top three classes were:

  • Ms. Klemm (932 Box Tops)
  • Ms. Tappan (345 Box Tops)
  • Ms. Mayes (319 Box Tops)

Ms. Klemm’s class celebrated with an ice cream sandwich and an opportunity to paint my hair.  It was quite exciting to have almost 30 students take a turn to add a color…pink, red, orange, blue!

Thank you families for your support! Box Tops bring funding to the PTA.  The PTA supports field trips, technology, cultural arts and many other enriching opportunities we enjoy at our school.

Keep saving! Another challenge is coming!

We had a fabulous end to 2016 at Fairhill!  With a band/chorus concert, Pajama Day and the annual sing-along for our students in the lobby on the last day before winter vacation, we were sent off into the winter break in a festive way! Wishing all a wonderful holiday, and a Happy New Year!
